Tanya has always loved anything & everything having to do with beauty & fashion. As a child she would play in her Godmother’s beauty salon, pass her godmother perm wrapping papers, sweep hair & occasionally talk her niece into being her pretend “client”. She went to beauty school while she was in high school, but did not finish the program. After she graduated high school, she went on to many office jobs & was efficient at those jobs but could not imagine herself in that field of work for the rest of her life. She even went to school for Massage Therapy, graduated & worked as a massage bodyworker for a short time, but still did not feel that was her calling. Finally she decided to go back to square one & graduated cosmetology school. She has since then never looked back & likes to joke that she just took the scenic route to get where she was meant to be all along.
- What is your favorite thing about being a hair designer?
I love being creative & being able to imagine the look the client is asking for, & then experiencing the excitement of the transformation. I have always admired all things of beauty, & could not imagine myself working in any other field. It is the greatest feeling in the world to have my client tell me that I’ve made her day, or boosted her self-confidence. I also love the relationship between a stylist & her clients. It is something very special to have a client’s loyalty & trust, & to be a part of their lives. So basically, to sum it up- my favorite part of being a hair designer is my clientele.
- What products could you not live without?
I could not imagine styling my own hair (or many of my clients’ hair) without Rusk Wired. It is a product staple- the “little black dress” of hair products that works great in just about anyone’s hair. I also use Rusk Being Primitive in my own hair, which is a great product for someone who wants to accentuate his or her texture & likes a more matte finish without the product being too dry to manipulate in the hair. My other favorite would be Rusk Deep Shine Lusterizer for incredible shine, conditioning, & manageability for straight or curly hair.
- What would you say is your best strength as a hair designer?
I feel my best strength is listening to my clients & making sure that while I give them my professional opinion, my priority is that they leave the salon with exactly what they want (or as close to it as possible). I have a very high respect for my clients & their needs & learned very early on in my training NOT to be scissor happy!!
- What is your favorite thing about working with the Onyx Design Team?
I consider it a privilege to be working with such a highly skilled & talented design team. I love that there is no competition among us. We all have a high regard for each other as colleagues & as friends & there is no backbiting or drama- everything is open & the air is clean- which is a MUST for a comfortable, productive & creative working environment.
- How would you say Onyx is different from other salons?
Onyx is a salon created by hair stylists who believe that there is a need for a higher level of customer service, professionalism, & expertise in our industry. We truly desire to go above & beyond those needs of our clients in the Roanoke Valley & surrounding areas. Your needs are our priority! When you step into our salon & when you are leaving, we want you to feel like a movie star. Plus, the salon just looks too cool for school!
