Marla Fox

Marla grew up in Salem, VA.  She is a graduate of Salem High School and the Virginia School of Hair Design in Hampton, VA. Before graduation, she was recruited by a local salon owner with over thirty years of experience.  She really furthered her education by working under him. In December 2006 she returned to her hometown and enrolled in the Onyx refresher course where she learned the Rusk techniques.  In July, 2007 she became a Educator/Designer on the International Rusk Design Team. Marla has performed platform work on stage for Rusk in cities such as New York, Nashville, Charlotte, and Birmingham. She is the extension specialist at Onyx and is highly skilled in ethnic hair cutting & styling/updo techniques.

What is your favorite thing about being a hair designer?
My favorite thing is that I love what I do! I get to be creative and artistic on a daily basis. Each day is different and that keeps my job exciting. I get to bring the best in each one of my clients.

What products could you not live without?
I don’t know how I ever lived without Wired. It really is a hair care staple. Anyone can use it. Wired takes my coarse, hard to handle texture and smoothes it from the inside out. Sheer Brilliance is also a must. I use it on my hair wet and dry. It delivers awesome shine.

What would you say is your best strength as a hair designer?
One of my biggest strengths is working with ethnic hair. My diverse education exposed me to all hair types. I also have a good ear. I am good at listening to my clients and making good decisions on what will work for them in their life. I am also certified in bonded hair extensions.

What is your favorite thing about working with the Onyx Design Team?
The best thing about the Onyx Team is that we are truly a team. Everyone is more than willing to help each other. We all work so well together. It makes work fun. Coming to Onyx from another salon where team spirit wasn’t always present, it makes me more appreciative of what we have here.


How would you say Onyx is different from other salons?
I think the education we received, and continue to receive really sets us apart. Learning the Rusk techniques and having Rusk educators in the salon with us everyday puts us a cut above the rest. I know that here at Onyx we will always further our education and stay on top of what is fresh and new.
