 Kate Lagueux is a highly motivated & driven individual. She likes to make the tracks for others to follow. Although she has always had a natural talent for hair and makeup, Kate has not always known that she wanted to be a hair designer. In fact, she made the decision to be in this industry shortly before starting dental school. She is certain that she made the right decision. Feeling very fortunate that she took this path, she couldn't be happier with her career.
Kate's first goal after completing hair school was to be a designer/educator for the United States RUSK Design Team and travel worldwide teaching & inspiring hairdressers in classes & on stage at hair shows. She accomplished that goal in August of 2004. Kate immediately set her next goal of making her dream become a reality by having an exclusive RUSK Hair Studio in her hometown of Roanoke. With a lot of dedication & a love for what she does, as of January 10th, 2006, Kate's wish came true. She created an amazing hair studio of her dreams…Onyx Premiere Hair Studio.
Kate hopes to keep servicing the Roanoke Valley with excellence for many years to come.
- What is your favorite thing about being a hair designer?
Everything! Educating my clients about their hair and their hair needs. Everyone thinks that they have the worst hair in the world. I love when a client leaves my chair knowing that they have great hair and how to keep it looking great. I love when a client has an image of what they want with their hair but have not been able to find anyone that could achieve it. The most rewarding thing about my job is when I can see my client’s reaction when I transform them to the exact look that they desired. It’s the best feeling in the world to make someone feel beautiful, regardless of age.
- What products could you not live without?
Personally, I could not live without Gleam (for luster/shine/smoothness/moisture) and Being Undressed (for texture/shine). These products come from the “Being” line and “Designer Collection” by Rusk. The Rusk “Being” line is great for people who like to express their personality through their hair. This heat-activated line also has tri-x complex which promotes healthy hair growth and reduces the amount of oil produced on the scalp while strengthening the ends. The Rusk “Designer Collection” is the tried and true group of products that deliver consistent results. I have a very coarse, curly, thick and frizzy texture. These products give me the smoothness, sleek movement, and separated texture that I want in my hair.
- What would you say is your best strength as a hair designer?
Besides having a rare understanding for the chemistry of color, I would have to say listening to my clients. I never proceed with the service until I know that I am on the same page with my client and understand exactly what they want 100%. I am a believer in educating my clients. They need to know everything about their hair and how to maintain it. I always give realistic goals. I am always very honest with my clients. (In fact, it is a joke in the salon about HOW HONEST I am with clients.) I am not afraid to tell it like it is. I am also very good at evaluating what hairstyles and hair colors look good on what face-shapes, eye color, and skin tone.
- What is your favorite thing about working with the Onyx Design Team?
Many things. We are a phenomenal team. Everything about the way we work together is spectacular. We exchange ideas with one other and feed off of each other’s strengths and creativeness. Our team creates such a positive energy which breeds a divine environment for clients to captivate. Each and every one of us is ambitious, and striving for similar goals. There is no competition between us. We work in unity.
- How would you say Onyx is different from other salons?

- Why did you want to be an educator for the United States Rusk Design Team?
I wanted to be part of Rusk because I knew that it would be an immense challenge and would keep me on my toes. I love to teach and help other hairdressers expand their knowledge and better themselves in this industry. Rusk has completely changed my career as a hair designer. Having to go through such intense training is exhausting but the benefits and rewards are unbeatable. Getting to work with world-renowned hair designers from all over the world is a huge honor to me. I plan to work, train, travel, and teach for Rusk for years to come.
